Thank you for participating in the worlds largest survey on e-books

The library recently promoted a survey on e-books that many of you took part in. This survey was run at universities across the UK and over 23,000 staff and students participated. This was the second survey run as part of the JISC national e-books observatory project, the first was in January 2008. The surveys were exploring current awareness, perceptions and attitudes towards e-books and looking to see if these changed between 2008 and 2009.

Together, these surveys received over 48,000 responses - the world’s biggest e-book survey ever undertaken! We would like to thank you for participating in the surveys. A lucky student, Mahesh Kumar studying an Msc in Democracy, Politics & Governance at Royal Holloway University of London won the £200 Amazon voucher prize.

Some headline findings from the surveys:
Use of e-books for study increased for students from 61.4% in 2008 to 64.4% in 2009 but the highest increase was use by staff, which increased from 58.9% to 64.9%. Surprisingly, over 63% of respondents said that they read the content of e-books from a screen with only around 6% printing pages out, however, the average time spent reading was only between 11 and 20 minutes. Over 54% of respondents said that they dip in and out of e-book chapters with only around 8% reading a whole chapter. Encouragingly, the percentage of teaching staff recommending e-books to students and placing direct links to them via the virtual learning environment or online reading lists increased between 2008 and 2009. There was no discernable difference between the use of e-books by age groups, although it does appear that men prefer e-books to women. Most staff and students get access to their e-books via the university library and dependency on this access had increased by 2009. Satisfaction with the availability of print textbooks through the library increased from 2008 to 2009 and this may be due to the availability of more e-books taking the pressure of the print copies. The results of the surveys will be used to develop the e-books market to help make sure that staff and students can get access to the books they need either in print or electronic format.

To find e-books available from the Library please search the Library Catalogue.

Library 24 hour opening

The Library is pleased to be able to open 24 hours once again this year.

In response to student feedback, 24 hour opening will be split into two periods: two weeks at the end of the Spring term and six weeks at the start of the Summer term.

First period:
Monday 9 March to Friday 19 March.

Second period:

During these weeks the Library will open at 08:30 on Monday and will close at midnight on Friday. For full details of our opening hours, the services you can expect, and our extended Easter opening, please see our opening hours web page.

Important points to note with regard to our services between midnight and 08:30 are as follows:
Normal Library regulations will apply during this period and will be enforced by security staff.
Entrance to the Arcade and the Library will be strictly by student card ONLY.
Food and drink may be consumed in the Learning Lounge ONLY and will not be permitted in any other area.
Please ensure all litter is cleared away and placed in the bins provided.
Please respect noise zones and only use mobile phones in the stairwells.
These regulations are for your comfort and for the comfort of your fellow students.

PLEASE NOTE: For environmental reasons the building needs to be fully vented for a two hour period between 03:00 and 05:00 each night. During these times all vents in the building will open and the temperature will fall noticeably. This process is essential in removing stale air from the building and replenishing with fresh.

Important information about access to Library electronic resources from 1 September 2008

From Monday 1 September the University will no longer be using Athens usernames and passwords to access our electronic resources. This is a result of a national decision and is affecting all universities across the UK.

From this date please use your Coventry University username and password to access all resources that previously used Athens.

For more information about these changes please see the Library’s
Passwords web page.

Note: The most reliable way to access our e-resources is via the
eLibrary. If you link to e-resources from here you will be prompted to login if necessary.

If you have any problems accessing our e-resources please ask at an enquiry desk in the Library or contact your
Subject Librarian.

Web of Knowledge database replaced by Scopus

The database Web of Knowledge has now been replaced by Scopus. These databases contain very similar content and it wasn't practical to subscribe to both of them. After careful consideration it was decided to cancel Web of Knowledge and just use Scopus as this database contains more records and is more user-friendly.

If you have been a Web of Knowledge user in the past, please try searching Scopus from now on.

You can link to Scopus from the
eLibrary.

International students Library contact

International students can contact Olivia Llewellyn to make an appointment for help using the library catalogue or the eLibrary:
